Homeless Entertainment: TikToker's Profits Plunge After Social Media Ban
A Perth content creator who spent his teenage years on the streets says social media saved his life, but the under-16s ban is now threatening his livelihood. Known as Homeless Entertainment, he earned $100 to $400 weekly on TikTok before the ban, but his income has plummeted since December 10th.
The 18-year-old explains that his income primarily came from livestreams, which now receive minimal views as his audience, largely teenagers, can no longer access the platform. He laments the loss of income, struggling to afford food and other necessities.
'Before the ban, my livestreams attracted 100,000 to 800,000 views, but now I'm lucky to get 500 views,' he says. 'I'm no longer earning, and it's challenging to meet my basic needs.'
He estimates that 50-60% of his audience was under 16, and while adults make up a significant portion, it's the younger viewers who engage with his content the most. This shift has dramatically impacted his earnings.
Western's stance is not against the ban itself but against the crackdown on users. He suggests that instead of forcing younger users off social media, the focus should be on social media platforms. He believes platforms should ban addictive features, improve moderation, and prevent adult content from reaching younger audiences.
Social media has been transformative for Western, offering purpose and an online community after his homelessness. He lived on the streets from age 13 to 17 and now resides in a trailer. He credits social media with saving his life multiple times.
Before becoming a content creator, social media provided support during his bullying experiences. He believes youth should have access to such support groups.
Looking ahead, Western aspires to be one of the biggest content creators while maintaining his connection to his community. He wants to be relatable, not a celebrity, and hopes to inspire others.
