IKEA has unveiled a revolutionary twist on its iconic 'donut lamp', introducing a smart version that's set to become a household favorite. But here's where it gets controversial: the real magic lies in the smooth, gradual transition between colors, creating an immersive lighting experience.
'A Journey Through Hues'
Designed in collaboration with Dutch artist Sabine Marcelis, the new IKEA Varmblixt lamp offers a unique take on color-changing lighting. Unlike traditional lamps, which often switch colors abruptly, the Varmblixt takes you on a gentle journey, slowly transforming the color of your space.
When you first turn it on, the lamp automatically cycles through 12 preset colors, each with subtle shifts in tone. But the real fun begins when you pair it with the IKEA Home Smart app. Here, you can choose from over 40 shades, adjust light intensity, and customize the dimming settings.
"We wanted to create a lamp that offered a smooth, seamless experience," Marcelis explains. "The transitions between colors are carefully curated, ensuring a gradual, immersive journey. It's like watching a beautiful sunset, where the light slowly moves through a spectrum of colors."
The Varmblixt is available as both a wall light and a table lamp, priced at $99, and will hit stores in April 2026.
And this is the part most people miss: IKEA is also releasing a smart version of its Varmblixt pendant light, focusing on subtle transitions between shades of white light. Both lamps can be controlled remotely or integrated into your smart home setup, thanks to the Matter standard.
With 21 new smart home gadgets announced in November, IKEA is clearly making a bold move into the smart home market. We can't wait to get our hands on the new Varmblixt lights and see how they transform our living spaces.
So, what do you think? Are you ready to embrace the smooth, immersive lighting experience of the IKEA Varmblixt? Or do you prefer the traditional, abrupt color changes? Let us know in the comments!
